Seize Control of Your Seasonal Allergies

Leaves are turning green, flowers are budding, the daylight is extending…all the wonderful signs that Spring is coming, and with it, begins the latest cycle of seasonal allergies. This is the story of “Alicia’s” life and death struggle with overcoming domestic violence. Below is your chance to help her and her children to not be homeless and hungry!

I am a patient of Dr. Godby, as many of you are. He asked me to share with you my story because, the truth is, my children and I are on the verge of homelessness and I need help as I am currently threatened with eviction from my apartment. I have almost no food in the fridge or cabinets, and have significant health issues that leave me debilitated at times. Dr. Godby thought that you (his patients) would appreciate having the opportunity to help me through this extremely difficult time. It is very difficult asking for help, but the truth is, without it, I don’t know what to do as I am not aware of any other options that I currently have. Any financial help that you could provide would be forever appreciated. The following is my story:

Although I grew up as a very healthy and happy young girl who loved life and all the people around me, right after I got married, everything abruptly changed. From one day to the next, I woke up to someone I didn’t know anymore and couldn’t understand. Day after day I lived in an environment of extreme abuse and torture. I found myself running around all day just trying to be safe.

Then after becoming allergic to birth control pills, and not being able to take them, I ended up having children brought into this nightmare that I would have never wished on anybody, let alone my own flesh and blood. Because my now, ex-husband and his family, have a lot of friends in high places and his parents are very wealthy, there was nowhere I could go for help. I was isolated from my family and friends and forced to deposit all my paychecks into his account and then I was made to beg for gas money to get back to work again. There was nothing in my name anywhere.

Things got worse when he forced me to quit my job about 2 months after getting married so he could control me better and to take away the little joy that I had there. Then came more isolation, and next, the actual gun in my face; he began telling me he was going to kill me. That night I thought I was going to die. I’m only here today by God’s grace. I was living in a country environment with no one around me. This was his plan. Between the isolation and constant threats there was no way I could get help.

Very quickly he realized how much I loved my children and from that moment on they became his favorite weapon to hurt me. He began threatening to kill me and to take off with my kids where I’d never be able to see them again. He said he was doing this because he knew this would hurt me more than anything else. I was living in an environment of regular physical (and 17 other forms of) abuse where I was picked up and thrown over his shoulder with my head running into walls. In the process then I was taken to any of the doors leading outside and thrown like a ball through the air until I slammed into columns by the door and then on to the concrete or various other things. Multiple objects were thrown at me; I was slammed into walls and choked, and then lifted off my feet by the throat until I nearly couldn’t breathe. Then I was dropped.

He’d find ways to torture me and sit and smile watching me try to endure it. Day after day, until 10 years later, God helped me find a way out and he was arrested and then the divorce began. But, unfortunately, it wasn’t over. Then, for the next, almost 3 1/2 years, we were in a court system that left us terrified and unprotected. During this time I began having health problems. My muscles were severely deteriorating and MD’s didn’t know why. My health continued to deteriorate, but I didn’t have any money and had 3 kids and my focus was on them and I had to keep pressing on.

After a lot of years we eventually came to a point where we thought things were calming down, but then suddenly, my ex-husband who had been very angry, thinking I may be starting to be happy or have a little peace, he bought off a judge and he got access to my kids. My health was in a very bad place by then and I had found myself unable to work and with less money than ever before. My list of health problems were long including severe pain everyday and exhaustion to a point where my body felt like it was trying to go into a coma. Going through all this I got word that he was taking me back to court to try to take my youngest son from me. My son and I were especially close and we had so much in common and we even looked alike. There are no words to explain how hard this was.

Just a few months ago I walked into a court with all my kids still with me and we were a family and that same afternoon I left with my youngest taken from us. I was not given any visitation or access to my son. I won’t be able to see him go through special moments in his life or watch him pursue his dreams or graduate high school in a few years. I felt like I couldn’t breathe. I wasn’t given time to say goodbye. Instead I had to rush home from court and quickly pack his stuff before his dad arrived and took all his things and my son too. I just collapsed as I watched him drive away. My health is really bad but I’ve had to try to work and I’m trying to work 2 jobs but I’m not able to pay even our most basic needs. I’ve nearly been taken by ambulance from work many times recently. Things have been very hard for a long time, but, I have realized some very important things. Hard things happen in life and I can’t make choices for others. But I can choose the way I respond to the things that happen in my life. So I choose not to return hatred and evil for that which has been shown to me. I’ve already forgiven those that hurt me so deeply and have even forgiven for the state I’ve been left in with my health and struggles. I’m choosing to be grateful instead of bitter. I may not have much now but I’m so grateful that I am still breathing, and that my other kids are still with me.

While my mental and spiritual attitude is resilient, the truth is, my family and I are doing very poorly on the physical level and we are on the verge of homelessness, and are already hungry. My health is extremely poor, and I am unable to buy much food. This is why I said yes to Dr. Godby’s idea to appeal to you – his patients. He told me of his Naturopathic Doctor friend in Colorado, where a patient heard about the financial struggles of another patient, and decided to pay for all his treatment. I refuse to look at this from a prospective of how broken I am but instead I look at how much I’ve grown and how much stronger I am. Evil wanted to destroy me and remove love and kindness from my heart but it didn’t win because I still love and now even deeper and with even more compassion and empathy for those who have hurt too. Although our world is filled with many severe problems of hate, revenge and evil, I choose to fight with love and forgiveness instead. We have the power to change the world and fill it with beautiful and positive things.

Why didn’t anybody tell me, and why didn’t I ask?

It is extremely unfortunate that most patients will not even think of going to a doctor until they have symptoms, which can have dire consequences, including a poorer quality of life, and possibly premature death, simply for not getting our bodies checked out.

Why do we take better care of our cars than our bodies? We can potentially buy another car, we can’t buy another body! How long would a car last if the owner did no regular maintenance, such as oil change, rotate the tires, etc. and just keep driving it until there was a problem?

A female patient, presented to our medical clinic with a sinus infection. Upon our doing our routine “cast a wide net blood test,” she was discovered to have a triglyceride level of 1,375! The standard reference range is under 150 for triglycerides (70-80 optimal range). She was completely unaware of her triglyceride level and that she was at serious risk of cardiovascular disease/atherosclerosis, diabetes, fatty liver and other conditions – until we did the blood tests.

After just 30 days on her prescribed naturopathic natural lifestyle treatment, which did not include any nutritional supplements, her new triglyceride level dropped into the optimal range of 75 – after just one month of treatment.

Who knows how long she was at such a high triglyceride level, thereby risking her health and life? While quick turnarounds in lab results are not always that simple or easy, often times they are that simple!
Has your doctor ever told you, “your blood test results are completely normal,” but instead of feeling relief, you felt worse, knowing that you had very uncomfortable symptoms but the doctor was unable to find any answers?

Many naturopathic medical doctors question not the usefulness of conventional blood tests themselves, but the standard wide “reference ranges” – the ranges are often so large that they have little practical value except to find very serious medical conditions.

For example, the most common laboratory test for hypothyroidism (low thyroid) is the Thyroid Stimulating Hormone. The common reference range is approximately 0.4 to 4.5 or 5.5 – a huge 10-to-13 times difference between the low and high range. The TSH “optimal” range of many naturopathic doctors is a much narrower, 1.3-2.0.

What difference does a range make to the patient? As in the TSH example, the optimal range-oriented doctor will more likely detect and treat the low thyroid, helping the patient to alleviate symptoms such as constipation, high cholesterol, weight gain, fatigue, hair loss, low libido, memory loss, etc. The doctor who diagnoses using only the standard range will often miss opportunities to help improve functioning of this critically important gland and provide relief to the struggling patient.

Naturopathic doctors seek to find and treat the cause of disease, and there are often multiple causes of symptoms and medical condition. However, re. the most common, preventable deficiency, does it make any sense to have any the following medical conditions (see partial list), in part, because of a lack of easily obtainable and inexpensive Vitamin D? All patients that come into my office that are not taking Vitamin D as a separate supplement have lower than optimal vitamin d levels (optimal is 50-100).

Low Vitamin D levels have been implicated in: Alzheimer’s Disease; asthma; autism; bone fractures; cancers: breast, cervical, colorectal, endometrial, esophageal, leukemia, melanoma, ovarian, and prostate; cognitive impairment; congestive heart failure; coronary heart disease; dental caries; depression; diabetes: type 1 and 2; dry eyes; fibromyalgia; hypertension; inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s Disease and ulcerative colitis); influenza; lupus (SLE); macular degeneration; multiple sclerosis; osteoporosis; Parkinson’s Disease; pre-term labor risk; periodontal disease, pneumonia; psoriasis; respiratory infections – just to name a few.

The bottom line is: do you want to be as healthy as you can possibly be right now, or do you hope to drive your “vehicle” as far and as fast as it can go and hope for the best?

5 weeks until marathon day!

Marathon training was going so well for months! The book, Run Less, Run Faster, inspired me more than I thought a running book ever could. My training schedule has been completely dictated on the exact schedule and goal times of training for a 4:00:00 marathon as studied by the FIRST program at Furman University. I loved the exactness of the training program: I do the specific interval training on Tuesday evenings at River City High Track, early Friday morning tempo runs to work, of 5-10 miles, and my favorite, early morning (to beat the heat) long runs on Sundays, up to 20 miles, on the beautiful South River Road, from West Sacramento to south of Clarksburg, right through wine country, but fortunately, too early to start drinking!

My first goal for this first marathon since the 1980s was to NOT get injured. And as of today, November 1, I haven’t been able to accomplish that goal successfully, as Friday, I strained my right hamstring – with just five weeks until countdown – I am sidelined! Why? More than like, it was because I was NOT stretching and strengthening sufficiently. As a consequence, I had to miss my 20 miler today – my favorite training run of the week. One more 20 miler remains on the schedule. Right now, my under 4:00:00 marathon seems in jeopardy.

My job now is to stay positive – to do everything I can to heal. Is it too late to break 4:00:00 for this December 6 California International Marathon (a 9:09 per minute mile for 26.2 miles)? The next couple of weeks will tell!

It is obvious that being 59 years of age I have lost a lot of speed since my 20s. When I was younger, I was much stronger and much more flexible. I have come to hate stretching and strengthening, with my busy schedule, but if I am going to prevent injuries in the future, I have to change my attitude. Who knows, I may even try yoga! And no, hell hasn’t frozen over, but since I encourage patients to try yoga, maybe I should also give it a try!

Preventing/Overcoming the Flu and Wintertime Illness (Hint: You are not flu shot deficient, but Vitamin D deficient)!

I have received a few calls and emails asking me what I would recommend for preventing the flu! I appreciate the patient who asked me this last weekend if the e-mail newsletter that I sent exactly two years ago, how to prevent and/or overcome the flu and wintertime illness, is still valid. The answer, is an unequivocal, YES! So, I am re-sending, with a few minor edits. I hope that you find it helpful!

I will not tell you not to get a flu shot if you are considering it. You have to weigh all your options, but I will tell you that contracting the flu is not because of a flu shot deficiency, any more than headaches are a result of an aspirin or ibuprofen deficiency.

Wintertime illness, including the flu, happens almost exclusively because the overwhelming majority of Americans’ immune system is down in the winter, because of the lack of Vitamin D, that cannot be derived from the winter sunshine. In my opinion, it is is a shame and extremely sad that something so easily affordable and painless, such as a Vitamin D supplement, is ignored. The consequences of not optimizing Vitamin D, including not preventing cancer, can be devastating.

If we want ourselves and our families to get and stay healthy, we have to do the easy things, first.

THE FLU!

I received an email this morning from a patient asking me how to overcome the flu, as her whole family is miserable. Others are also inquiring about flu shots, and NDs are talking up a storm on our Naturopathic Chat group which includes 2,500 NDs from all over the nation!

Naturopathic philosophy about germs and illness is that germs don’t necessarily make a person sick. Poor health/immune system combined with germs are the perfect breeding grounds for getting sick. All things being equal, a person that is: happy, grateful, forgiving, not sleep deficient, eating healthy, a nonperfectionist, involved in healthy relationships, exercises moderately, etc., will much less likely to get sick than the reverse of the above. When was the last time you or family member got sick when you did not have a lot of stress, or were eating poorly, “burning the candle at both ends, were exercising, etc.”

Vitamin D: The reason the flu, colds, etc. happen mostly in the winter is not because it is colder, or because there are more bacteria and viruses in the winter, but because of the lack of Vitamin D conversion from about mid-October to through March (in the Sacramento area). The sun can feel wonderful, it can raise our moods because of the light, and it can even feel warm in sunny California in the winter – but there is no Vitamin D because of the winter latitude. If you haven’t taken your Vitamin D blood test lately. I would suggest 20,000 IUs per day for a month, then cut to 5,000 IUs a day.

Vitamin D optimal range on the Vitamin D blood test is 60-80. For optimal immune support (including preventing cancer) please strive for that range (not the standard 30-100). I can guarantee that unless you are taking Vitamin D3, at least 2,000-5,000 a day through the winter (many need more, but it’s impossible to know exactly without testing) you are currently deficient. Vitamin D3, even on a family budget is affordable.It should be the first priority in the nutritional medicine preventative cabinet.

I would also recommend making sure that Vitamin K2 is taken with the Vitamin D3, for better bones, less arterial calcification and improved cardiovascular system.

Transfer Factor MultiImmune: 1 cap, 2x a day between meals

SyImmune: 1 tablet dissolved under the tongue daily (away from food).

Nutrition

Dairy: Contributes to the formation of mucus

Sugar: Sugar depletes the immune system for four hours every time it is consumed. Do not drink fruit juices or give them to children.

Packaged/Processed/Junk Food/Fast Food: Eliminate as many illness-producing “foods” that you can from your lifestyle.

Stress Reduction

Count your blessings; seek peaceful, loving and forgiving relationships, etc. All of us do things in our life (such as faulty attitudes) that contribute to stress. Change the things you can change about yourself that contribute to stress.

Sleep

Make sure to get enough sleep. Sleep deprivation also adds to a weakened, more vulnerable body.

At the very first sign of a cold or flu (this works absolutely amazing):
Supplements

SyInfekt: 1 tablet dissolved under the tongue every 20 minutes for about 4 hours.
SyImmune lotion: Apply lotion at the same time as the SyInfekt tablet is taken (every 20 minutes); put behind/under the ears, on throat, etc.
Should the flu go deeper, stop the SyImmune, continue with Sy Infekt: 1 tab, 3x a day

Also add:

Mycobactin S: 1 cap, 2x per week
Quentans: 1 Suppository daily or 1-2 caps a day
Notatum-Quentans Nasal Spray: 3-4 x per day in each nostril and in the back of the throat. Also great for sinus congestion.
For flu with digestive distress, add:

SyGest: 1 tab dissolved under the tongue 2-3 x daily for nausea and bloating.
Complementary remedies to consider:

apo-Pulm: congestive cough
apo-Tuss: dry cough
Spray away: sore throat
apo-Stom: digestive disharmony
Okoubaka: diarrhea from stomach flu
Neu-regen: difficulty recovering vitality after the flu.

If the American people, especially parents, really understood the meaning of the study mentioned above (and see the full article below), that merely drinking sodas, accelerated cellular aging of tissues, in addition to the diseases already associated with sugar, I believe that this habit of drinking 12-20 teaspoons or more of sugar, just in one soda, would come to a screeching halt. The problem seems to be a disconnect between the actual practice of drinking sodas and consuming other junk food, and the deterioration of health, possibly because so many people see so many of their peers drinking soda on a regular basis, and because they cannot see the immediate physical harm being done to their cells, denial is the order of the day. The immediate gratification of drinking something sweet and not having to be different than peers, is easily victorious over life-sustaining, but plain water.
 
Sugared Soda Consumption, Cell Aging Associated in New Study
UCSF Scientists Find Shorter Telomeres in Immune Cells of Soda DrinkersSugar-sweetened soda consumption might promote disease independently from its role in obesity, according to UC San Francisco researchers who found in a new study that drinking sugary drinks was associated with cell aging.

The study revealed that telomeres — the protective units of DNA that cap the ends of chromosomes in cells — were shorter in the white blood cells of survey participants who reported drinking more soda. The findings were reported online October 16, 2014 in the American Journal of Public Health.

The length of telomeres within white blood cells — where it can most easily be measured — has previously been associated with human lifespan. Short telomeres also have been associated with the development of chronic diseases of aging, including heart disease, diabetes, and some types of cancer.

“Regular consumption of sugar-sweetened sodas might influence disease development, not only by straining the body’s metabolic control of sugars, but also through accelerated cellular aging of tissues,” said Elissa Epel, PhD, professor of psychiatry at UCSF and senior author of the study.

“This is the first demonstration that soda is associated with telomere shortness,” Epel said. “This finding held regardless of age, race, income and education level. Telomere shortening starts long before disease onset. Further, although we only studied adults here, it is possible that soda consumption is associated with telomere shortening in children, as well.”

The authors cautioned that they only compared telomere length and sugar-sweetened soda consumption for each participant at a single time point, and that an association does not demonstrate causation. Epel is co-leading a new study in which participants will be tracked for weeks in real time to look for effects of sugar-sweetened soda consumption on aspects of cellular aging. Telomere shortening has previously been associated with oxidative damage to tissue, to inflammation, and to insulin resistance.

Based on the way telomere length shortens on average with chronological age, the UCSF researchers calculated that daily consumption of a 20-ounce soda was associated with 4.6 years of additional biological aging. This effect on telomere length is comparable to the effect of smoking, or to the effect of regular exercise in the opposite, anti-aging direction, according to UCSF postdoctoral fellow Cindy Leung, ScD, from the UCSF Center for Health and Community and the lead author of the newly published study.

The average sugar-sweetened soda consumption for all survey participants was 12 ounces. About 21 percent in this nationally representative sample reported drinking at least 20 ounces of sugar-sweetened soda a day.

“It is critical to understand both dietary factors that may shorten telomeres, as well as dietary factors that may lengthen telomeres,” Leung said. “Here it appeared that the only beverage consumption that had a measurable negative association with telomere length was consumption of sugared soda.”

The finding adds a new consideration to the list of links that has tied sugary beverages to obesity, metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease, and that has driven legislators and activists in several U.S. jurisdictions to champion ballet initiatives that would tax sugar-sweetened beverage purchases with the goal of discouraging consumption and improving public health.

The UCSF researchers measured telomeres after obtaining stored DNA from 5,309 participants, ages 20 to 65, with no history of diabetes or cardiovascular disease, who had participated in the nation’s largest ongoing health survey, called the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, during the years 1999 through 2002. They found that the amount of sugar-sweetened soda a person consumed was associated with telomere length, as measured in the laboratory of Elizabeth Blackburn, PhD, professor of biochemistry at UCSF and a winner of the 2009 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for her telomere-related discoveries.

Additional study authors include, from UCSF, Nancy E. Adler, PhD, professor of psychiatry and director of the Center for Health and Community, and Jue Lin, PhD, an associate researcher with Blackburn’s lab; from UC Berkeley, Barbara A. Laraia, PhD, director of public health nutrition; from the University of Michigan, Belinda Needham, PhD, assistant professor of epidemiology; and from Stanford University, David H. Rehkopf, ScD, assistant professor of medicine.

Just remember, about the joy part, don’t be so joyful this holiday season that you increase your carbohydrate (starch) consumption too much, AND, regardless of your plans for the holiday – keep moving your body. Whether you are currently doing a formal “exercise,” or not, MOVE, MOVE, and then MOVE some more! Move at every opportunity. Remember, “Perfection is the enemy of the good,” and do what you can do, rather than what you can’t do. Every movement, stretch, taking the stairs instead of the elevator, etc. makes a big difference. Please don’t wait until, “next year.” You will be proud of yourself if you start TODAY!

Redemption and Forgiveness on the Interstate!
A few days ago, while with a patient, I was reminded of one of my all-time favorite stories of redemption and forgiveness that I first read in Oregon’s most widely circulated newspaper, The Oregonian. I was so inspired and moved by the story that I told it many times as a high school religious studies morality and social justice teacher and elsewhere. I have never been able to tell the story without getting emotional. It will warm your heart, and brighten your day during this holiday and almost winter season:
One day, a mom and dad received the absolutely devastating and life-changing news that their 18-year-old son was killed by a drunk driver.The drunk driver was subsequently sentenced to about 3-4 years in prison. The sentenced man, from the time of the accident to sentencing, appeared to be genuinely remorseful and sorrowful for the life he had taken through his negligence.
It also turned out that the man was the only parent and sole custodian for his 5-year-old daughter, who had terminal cancer. The man knew his jail time was just, but, given the circumstances of his terminally ill child, he asked the judge if he could serve the jail time after his daughter died since she had nobody else. The mom and dad said they were absolutely opposed to him being given any consideration. After all, they said, we lost our child to his senseless act, why should we have any compassion for this man who killed our son!
Then one day, they were driving down the interstate, and it came to them, “we are people of faith, we don’t believe in revenge. We believe in compassion and not revenge. This is the time to demonstrate our beliefs when things are tough, not just when things are easy.” They knew that what they had told the judge, previously, about denying the man’s request, was not what God wanted. They said to each other,”why would we want this man to have to go through the hell we did?”
So they went back to the judge and asked that the man be granted his wishes to serve his time after his daughter passes away. The judge granted their wish. The man was visibly shaken, and broke down in tears, and said that he had never experienced such compassion, mercy and forgiveness and would forever be affected!
Months later the child did indeed die from cancer, and the man then served his time in jail as prescribed by law.

 
If in Doubt, Throw it Out!

If you are taking over-the-counter nutritional supplements – please do yourself a favor and read the following information!
 
Naturopathic doctors routinely ask their new patients what pharmaceuticals and nutritional supplements they are already taking. I am also asked by patients my thoughts on their supplements. Many are invested emotionally in their products. I try to be respectful about that. I am not, however, familiar with many of the products because we prescribe “professional” supplements which are only available through healthcare practitioners, so it is has been difficult to comment – until now.
 
The last several months, I have begun making some significant changes on my commentaries, in part due to the work of Ben Lynch, ND, on the methylation issue of folate/B12, (more on this critically important issue in the next newsletter). Through my investigation of supplements that are currently on the market, because of that issue, I have come to the unfortunate conclusion, that most over-the-counter supplements, whether sold in a health food store or in chain drug store, may not only not be helping people, but, on the contrary, could even be worsening one’s health!
I would like for you to answer the following questions: would you go out to eat at just any place that serves food, or buy just any car, or buy just any house in any neighborhood, or buy groceries at just any store – then why buy and consume just any nutritional supplement? People make many choices in life, some are based on health, many are not. Is there any other purpose of a nutritional supplement than to promote health?  

 Nutritional Supplements Quality

The most expensive dietary supplement you can take is the one that does not work, or even worse, may even cause harm!

The solution to your health problem depends to a large extent on the clinical effectiveness of your physician’s treatment program, which usually includes certain vitamins, herbs, and other nutrients. Naturopathic doctors recommend nutritional supplements known to be among the safest and most effective available, based not only on their own and the collective experience of their colleagues, but also because the companies that they recommend have certain characteristics:

1.      cGMP (current Good Manufacturing Principles)-certification or even stricter FDA-registered drug establishment credentials. As important as GMPs are, they are simply very basic guidelines that outline what a manufacturer should and should not do to ensure the quality and purity of its finished products.

2.      Comprehensive scientific evaluation of ingredients: Quality ingredient selection makes the biggest difference in living up to its health-promoting potential. Bargain nutritional supplements, often made with low cost ingredients, risk safety and/or effectiveness.

3.      Comprehensive safety reviews: Lost cost suppliers often don’t spend the time or money to conduct adequate medical literature reviews.

4.      Human clinical evaluations: These are best for proving the potential effectiveness. Most providers, however, due to the extreme cost, do not invest in human clinical studies. The recommended nutritional products have often been the subjects of thousands of peer-reviewed-published clinical trials and studies, including one company that has been the subject of over 2,500 independent, peer-reviewed-published, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trials and studies.

5.      Scientific staff and facilities: An advanced scientific staff and sophisticated facilities are necessary to achieve true quality. Multiple scientific disciplines are required for thorough analyses of products and ingredients-genomics, proteomics, molecular biology, nutritional biochemistry, ethnobotany, food technology, formulation chemistry and clinical research all play a significant role.

6.      Safety: Every batch of raw materials tested by independent laboratories for: microbiology (bacteria, yeast, mold, Salmonella, E. coli, etc.). Every batch of herbal raw materials tested for: herbicide and pesticide residue; heavy metals (lead, mercury, etc); chemical or solvent residue; aflatoxin; and others. I often get questions from patients and friends about the difference between drugstore supplement brands, and professional supplement brands that Naturopathic Doctors recommend. Here are a few reasons to dump your current products and see an ND about the right supplements for you.

1.     Absorption

Vitamins and minerals come in many different forms, some of which are more readily absorbed in the digestive tract than others. High quality supplements will use the most bioavailable, active form of the vitamin to ensure that your body can absorb and use it appropriately.

2.     Label Matching Contents

A recent study looked at claimed doses on the label of vitamin supplements, compared with the actual dose in each pill, and found an overwhelming discrepancy with potency varying from 9% – 140%. High quality supplements go through rigorous quality control to ensure that each and every tablet, capsule, or spoonful delivers exactly what the label says.

3.     Correct Dose 

 Ok, so if the label matches the pill, then it’s a good supplement, right? Wrong. A good supplement will not only ensure the dose listed is what’s in the bottle, but also ensure that this is a sufficient dose to see benefits.

Buying a good supplement with a high dose will mean you only need to take 1 or 2, and SAVE you money.

4.       Fillers and Toxins

Average supplements often have many fillers which people may be allergic or sensitive to. These fillers may also hinder the absorption of other ingredients in the formula.Many supplements may also contain toxins like mercury and lead. Professional supplements will ensure no contamination, and no toxins.

5.       Backed by Research 

High quality supplements have research to support their benefit in two different ways. A good company will critically analyze a wide variety of research and include appropriate doses and forms of well-researched ingredients in their formulas. A great company will conduct their own research on their formulas to ensure that the product yields the expected benefit.


The Risks of Self-Supplementation

To make a long story short:

  1. Self-supplementing can be just as dangerous as self-prescribing or self-diagnosing.
  2. See an expert who has education and experience in clinical nutrition.
  3. Labels can be deceiving and confusing.
  4. There are more products out there that have negligible doses than those with appropriate doses, don’t be fooled.
  5. Not all supplements and vitamins are safe, some are absolutely contraindicated for certain people.
  6. The media (news, TV shows, etc…) are more interested in thrilling an audience rather than doing legitimate research.
  7. Don’t believe everything you hear, when in doubt ask your local ND.
  8. Some supplements are targeted towards specific populations or conditions but when you look at the ingredients they’re just repackaging a multi-vitamin or a single nutrient, calling it something else and charging way more.
  9. I would prefer all of my patients get their nutrients through whole foods but those who are deficient or can’t get them from whole foods should be taking appropriate supplements.
  10. If you’re going to be spending $100-$1000’s on supplements each year, it would be wise to know which ones are appropriate or not.

Lack of proper knowledge

  • Just because someone works out and looks healthy doesn’t necessarily mean they know what they’re talking about. Bodybuilding forums have increased the demand for nutraceutical companies but getting advice from friends or online forums is dangerous. The paradox of the internet is that those who are qualified know they shouldn’t give individuals medical advice over the internet and those are unqualified are the ones who give medical advice over the internet. 
  • As part of my health intake I ask patients to bring in all of their medications and supplements so I can see what they are taking. This allows me to make sure there aren’t any potential interactions and gives me a chance to teach them what to look for in proper supplements so they aren’t wasting their money or putting their health at risk.

Interactions

  • Myth: All vitamins are safe; you’ll just pee out what you don’t need.
  • Fact: There are several interactions natural health products can have with specific medications or conditions.
  • Fact: Certain minerals and nutrients counterbalance other ones (i.e. Zinc and Copper, Calcium and Magnesium). Thanks to nature, most of these balances are accommodated for in whole foods. Some supplements however, don’t take these balances into consideration.

Deceptive marketing

  • Labels can be very deceiving and confusing
  • A couple things to be aware of are dosages, nutrient form (i.e. magnesium citrate vs magnesium oxide), source of the nutrient and serving size.
  • Serving size is very important because you could be comparing 2 labels but one might be for 4 capsules so it might look like they have the same amount but in reality it could have a fourth of the dose of the other.

Contraindications

  • There are numerous conditions which are contraindicated with certain supplements. Some contraindications are relative and some are strict. This is the main reason why giving medical advice to someone when you don’t know their health history is dangerous.
  • A few examples are psoriasis and vitamin C, Licorice and high blood pressure or fiber and any medications.

Improper research extrapolation

You don’t necessarily get what you pay for

  • There are a lot of deceptive supplements out there. Some who target vulnerable populations will charge through the roof but when you look at the ingredients they are just a typical multivitamin with negligible doses. An example of this are some supplements targeted for those who are infertile, bipolar, or have kids with autism or ADHD, etc…There are also simple supplements out there for conditions like restless leg syndrome that just contain an single ingredient like magnesium citrate which you can buy for a fifth of the price.

Days 19-20: Don’t exercise much when restricting calories!
